Preston Reed - "An Introduction to Integrated Percussive Guitar Playing"

Integrated percussive guitar playing means incorporating a percussive groove into a solo guitar composition. It is a way of accessing the true sonic potential of the acoustic guitar, and can add a new dimension of rhythm, texture and originality to your guitar playing and songwriting. Using examples from my current live repertoire and past recordings, students will learn the principals of behind multi-voiced solo guitar playing including “tapping” and other techniques for two-handed playing on the guitar neck, the names and locations of various drum and percussive sounds on the body and neck of the guitar, creating an integrated percussive groove, tips for optimising percussive sounds, using integrated percussion in your own music, and some recommended guitar tunings for further exploration in this style. This workshop is appropriate for all levels of guitar skill, however some guitar experience is recommended. Equipment needed to participate in the workshop: a normal steel string or nylon string acoustic guitar. Tablature transcriptions are not used in the workshop, however PDF transcriptions of the music I will be teaching will be available to download.

Instructional Clinics for the 2023 Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase will be posted as they are confirmed.

Clinics cost $40 per person per clinic. Pay at the door with cash or credit card. There is limited space, so advance reservations are recommended. You do not need to buy a pass to the Luthiers Showcase to attend Clinics.

Participants should bring their own instruments, tuners, capos, any permitted recording devices, etc. Clinics will be held in the Pavilion of The Bear Cantina (295A Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY 12498), northwest corner of the Bearsville Center complex, steps away from the Bearsville Theater. There will be a free guitar checkroom there for Clinic attendees. No personal instruments are allowed in the Luthiers Showcase Bearsville Theater or Utopia Soundstage exhibition areas.
